JOHANNESBURG – Toyota’s Hilux might be the best-selling vehicle in South Africa by a decent margin, but the local automaker isn’t about to let it stagnate in any way, so the popular bakkie is now getting its second update since launch. of the eighth -generation model four years ago.
And while this latest model upgrade brings a bolder exterior look, buyers can also expect a refined model range and, more importantly, more power for the flagship diesel.
To that end, Toyota has upgraded the 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which now produces 150 kW and 500 Nm, the latter operating in a longer range, up from 130 kW and 450 Nm for the current engine. The revised engine features multiple new components, including a redesigned turbocharger, and cooling has also been improved.
The other engine variants continue as before. These include the popular 2.4 GD-6 turbodiesel, which continues to deliver 110 kW and 400 Nm, although the braked towing capacity has been increased by 300 kg to match the 3,500 kg figure of the 2.8 model.
Toyota also offers three normally aspirated petrol units, 2-liter (102kW / 183Nm), 2.7-liter (122kW / 245Nm) and 4.0 V6 (175kW / 376Nm).
Toyota has made some improvements to the driving experience of the Hilux models, with a new variable steering system aimed at offering a more positive feel, while the body and chassis mounts have been revised to reduce noise and vibration.
Revised (and very wide) model range
As before, there are a wide variety of derivatives to choose from, but the lineup has been modified. While the base S and SR models continue as before (and without a facelift), the previous SRX has been discontinued to make way for the 2.4-liter versions of the Raider, so this is essentially the new ‘specs option. medias’ in the Hilux Range.
The Raider gets a unique styling package that includes a trapezoidal grille with a chrome trim.
While the Raider will take on Ford’s XLT Ranger models, Toyota has also introduced a sportier Legend derivative, which will go head-to-head with the Wildtrak.
You can distinguish Legend models by their unique hood trim above the grille, as well as by the black grille trim and wheel arches. Buyers can make their Legend models even more distinctive with an ‘RS’ package (only available on 4×4), which includes a motorized roller blind and graphite-colored sport bar, rubber bedliner, power-assisted tailgate with central locking function and dust-defense kit. Also offered is a Plus package that offers a full suite of advanced driver assistance features, including active cruise control.
Revised cabin
The basic cabin design remains largely as before, although there is a new instrument cluster and a 20cm ‘floating effect’ touchscreen infotainment system for the Raider and Legend models.
The Legend is further distinguished by blue door lighting, black headlining, black leather upholstery and a unique accent treatment for the interior trim befitting its flagship status. Additionally, a unique accent treatment is applied to the instrument cluster, interior trim panels, switchgear and gear lever.
As before, all Hilux models are sold with a 3-year / 90,000 km warranty and a 9 service / 90,000 km service plan.
