It is not yet clear whether SA will experience a second Covid-19 surge, but if it does, the country will be prepared.
This was the assurance of the Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, on Tuesday.
“We now have a plan that has been presented to us by the World Health Organization (WHO) on how to deal with the second wave and therefore I would say that we are in a much better position. Once we have discussed the plan, I will suggest that we go and share it so that we are on the same page when it comes to preparing for the future, “he said.
Mkhize spoke during a webinar organized by the South African Medical Association. He said that based on predictions and models, the worst was over.
“Of course, we may still face a second increase. How likely that is, is something I think we all speculate about because a lot of the countries that are outperforming South Africa are on the second surge. But whether this is going to be the case in South Africa depends, of course, on how we handle our containment measures, ”Mkhize said.
His comments come as the country has more than 17,000 Covid-19-related deaths and more than 680,000 confirmed infections, as of Monday night.
