Rwanda

Rwanda, like so many African countries, is a beautiful place stained by a dark history. Because this can and should not be forgotten, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center is a sobering stop for any visitor to understand the horrors that occurred and reflect on our humanity.

What really sets Rwanda apart in terms of travel destination, and the reason we’ve included it on our list, is its gorilla population in Volcanoes National Park, one of the best places to keep track of gorillas. . It offers visitors a unique opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat through carefully monitored encounters led by experienced rangers.

At a cost of almost R25,000 per person per day for a permit, gorilla tracking is not a cheap expedition, but it provides much-needed funding for conservation efforts in the country, with a portion of the proceeds used for raise the local communities.

If the price of gorilla tracking is too high, there are other options to explore. Nyungwe National Park, for example, is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and is home to 1,068 species of plants and 140 different types of orchids. Don’t miss the canopy walkway through the rainforest or take responsible tourism with a tour of a tea or coffee plantation.

When to visit: Although a gorilla hiking expedition can be planned throughout the year, the best time for the easiest hiking conditions is during the shortest dry season from mid-December to early February or during the longest dry season between June and September. Kwita Izina, Rwanda’s gorilla naming ceremony in which all baby gorillas who were born last year are named, is held annually on World Gorilla Day on September 24.
