In addition to the 255 million rand for the audit project, over the past six years, Free State Human Settlements has spent more than 120 million rand replacing these dangerous roofs or rebuilding dilapidated houses.

The department has managed to build just 3,518 new units since 2014. That’s an average of just 586 homes a year.

“We have been waiting for them to fix the asbestos problem until now,” he said.

“This asbestos is not good. It gives us TB. We no longer have our children because of the asbestos that causes TB.

“There is nothing the councilor is saying about it.”

Ditshegwane Botsine said she fears she developed cancer from years of exposure.

“I grew up with lung problems. When it rains, asbestos dust falls inside the house and then I breathe it in,” Botsine said.
