CAPE TOWN – Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said the controversial Beitbridge border fence was useless.
Defense forces officials have told Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) that the fence was the responsibility of the Department of Public Works.
Mapisa-Nqakula and her Public Works counterpart Patricia de Lille appeared before Scopa on Tuesday to give an account of the fence that has been described as a sham.
Both ministers have appeared before Scopa to give an account of the failed 40 million rand project.
The defense force, as the end user of the fence in protecting the border, has been questioned about its effectiveness.
Mapisa-Nqakula told MPs that people continued to cross the border illegally into South Africa and that some had even damaged the fence.
“The whole fence has not worked and probably will not work. The quality of the fence we put up doesn’t matter. “
He also told MPs that they would work on new technology to protect the border, including the use of drones.
“I understand that one of the decisions we have made, President, is to start using drones and rely more on technology and also sensors.”
