Violence broke out in front of Senekal Magistrates Court, where hundreds of farmers and residents had gathered in the city of Free State in a show of support for Brendin Horner’s family.

The 22-year-old farm manager had been brutally beaten and his body tied to a post on a farm near Paul Roux last Friday.

When the two suspects made a brief court appearance on Tuesday, the angry crowd screamed for their blood and vowed to avenge Horner’s murder themselves.

Sekwetje Mahlamba and Sekola Matlaletsa were arrested the next day in connection with the brutal attack.

Two shots were fired, judicial property destroyed and a police vehicle overturned and set fire to angry farmers, who believe the government is not doing enough to protect them.

According to police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, a group of farmers broke into the court building shortly after the two suspects were placed in pre-trial detention, demanding that the men be handed over to them.

Makhele said that while the situation was under control for now, police have requested reinforcements to help restore calm.

Several DA supporters who attended the meeting expressed their support for the farmers before the situation turned violent. The party said it saw the attacks on farmers and their staff as part of an ongoing “low intensity war”.

“Brendin Horner, who worked on a farm, paid the highest price for his career choice as a young South African farmer. Crime remains one of the most serious economic and security threats to our farming community,” said the district attorney. .

“Crimes committed on farms that include murder and rape are already treated as costly low intensity warfare by the farming community and must be recognized as such by the government.”

The two suspects have been held in custody until their next court appearance on October 16.
