JOHANNESBURG – The President of the African National Congress (ANC), Cyril Ramaphosa, said the work currently being done by law enforcement agencies is commendable.

Ramaphosa made the remarks Monday night when the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) Lekgotla closed, which took place over the weekend.

The president’s views came after a series of arrests by the Hawks of officials implicated in acts of corruption.

Former ANC MP Vincent Smith, former Mangaung Mayor Olly Mlamleli and ANC-linked businessman Edward Sodi were among those facing criminal charges.

Ramaphosa said that the high levels of gender-based violence and corruption were a huge and unnecessary cost to the social and economic fabric of the country.

He said the NEC meeting, which was also attended by former Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe, affirmed the work that is being done to suppress crime.

“The work that law enforcement agencies are doing at this time is commendable, and we reaffirm that we must leave no stone unturned in addressing crime and corruption.”

Ramaphosa also said that Lekgotla agreed on the role of state employees.

“In this regard, Lekgotla reaffirmed the position of the ANC and the government that state employees should not do business with the government,” he said.

But it appeared that the contentious issue of politically connected people doing business with the government remained a sensitive topic, and the president said Lekgotla agreed to discuss it at a later stage.
