Durban – Former KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and Captain Ashwin Narainpershad appeared before the Durban Magistrates Court in connection with an investigation into a 47 million rand tender for temporary police accommodation during the Cup 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The spokesperson for the National Tax Authority Investigations Directorate, Sindisiwe Twala, said the charges include multiple corruption charges, while three of them face fraud and forgery charges.

The Prosecutor of the Directorate of Investigations, Talita Louw, said that they did not oppose the bail and Judge Vanitha Armu granted Ngobeni a bail of 20,000 rand and Narainpershad 10,000 ra.

Bilal Malani represented Narainpershad, while Ravindra Maniklall represented Ngobeni.

On Friday, Durban businessman and former associate of Jacob Zuma, Thoshan Panday, appeared in Durban Magistrates Court alongside Colonel Navin Madhoe.

In his court papers on Friday to support his request for bail, Panday stated that he owned “real property and four cars” in Plettenberg Bay, but did not mention its monetary value.

He said he earned R20,000 a month which he used “to pay for ordinary expenses.”

In addition, he affirmed that if I do not receive the bail, “my children and my family will suffer prejudice.”

Maniklall, who also represents Madhoe, said the case was old, dating back to 2010.

“It has been going on for 10 years. You have yet to lead your life, but this has come 10 years too late,” he said.

Panday and Madhoe were released on bail of 100,000 and 10,000 rand, respectively.

The matter was postponed to November 11.
