Latest global developments

These are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:

– Cautious optimism about Trump –

Doctors are expected to decide on Monday whether to discharge US President Donald Trump from the hospital where he is being treated for the coronavirus, following conflicting reports over the weekend about his condition.

“We remain optimistic that based on his incredible progress and how strong he has been in terms of his fight against this Covid-19 disease, he will be released,” his chief of staff Mark Meadows told Fox News.

However, the news that White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany also tested positive for Covid-19 showed just how infected her circle has become, as she fights for reelection on November 3.

– Paris cafes to close –

Bars and cafes in Paris and its closest suburbs will be closed starting Tuesday, as the capital is on high coronavirus alert in the face of alarming Covid-19 infection figures, the capital’s police chief says.

The restaurants will remain open as long as they respect the new security measures, Didier Lallemant said at a press conference.

– Ten percent of the world infected –

The WHO estimates that 10 percent of the world has been infected by the new coronavirus, far more than has been recorded.

To date, more than 35.2 million cases of Covid-19 have been registered worldwide, of which at least 1,037,971 have died, according to an AFP count this Monday based on official sources.

However, WHO emergency director Michael Ryan told a special meeting of the WHO executive board that around a tenth of the 7.8 billion people on the planet have already been infected, more than 20 times the official count.

– Russia nears a new record –

Russia records an increase in coronavirus cases near the maximum level in May, but falls short of imposing a new blockade.

On Sunday it registered 10,888 new cases, approaching the highest level recorded of 11,656 on May 11.

Of these, 3,537 were in Moscow, the worst-hit city by far, where Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said there are “many seriously ill.”

– Towards a new Irish blockade? –

Coalition government leaders in Ireland are meeting with the medical director to discuss a national shutdown after government experts recommended increasing restrictions on the coronavirus to curb the rise in new cases.

The National Public Health Emergencies Team (NPHET) recommended late on Sunday that all of Ireland move to the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions, mirroring those issued during the original shutdown in March.

– New records in Iran –

Iran announces 235 new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a figure that equals the record set almost 10 weeks ago.

The Islamic Republic also announces a new record for the number of Covid-19 infections in a single day, for the second time in less than a week.

Tehran has been struggling to contain what is the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East since reporting its first cases in February.
