Former ANC MP, Others Appear In Court For R4.8m Scam Theft Case In Limpopo

Former ANC MP Moloko Stanford Maila appeared in Polokwane Magistrates Court on Monday with three other individuals in connection with a 4.8 million rand theft case involving the Limpopo Makgatho Community Property Association.

His co-defendants are Maphala Lazarus Mosena, 53, municipal director of the local Molemole municipality, Manase Steven Makgatho, 51, a bank clerk, and Lepota Eric Makgatho, 70, former president of the association.

Maila was arrested at his home in Kanana Village on Sunday morning, News24 previously reported. The Serious Business Crimes Investigation Unit arrested Mosena on Friday. This was followed by the arrest of Lepota Eric Makgatho at his home in Ga Makgatho village on Friday night. Manase Steven Makgatho surrendered to the team at Polokwane on Saturday.

“The Hawks received a tip in 2018 about the theft of money at the Makgatho Community Properties Association by some of the committee members,” said Limpopo Hawks spokesman Capt.Matimba Maluleke.

“It is alleged that, between 2015 and 2018, the suspects allegedly conspired and awarded an agricultural tender to a company linked to the wife of the senior municipal official without following due process.”

The defendants were held in custody until Thursday for a formal request for bail. On Monday, Maluleke said the investigation is still continuing.
