A businessman has appeared in a Gauteng court for fraud and other charges after he allegedly failed to deliver 570 desktop computers for which the city of Johannesburg paid more than R7.5 million.

Dressed in a dark suit, Deon Pillay, the sole director of Esizwe Technology (Pty) Ltd, appeared in the Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Monday.

His time on the dock ended in less than five minutes. The State was supposed to deliver the contents of the file to the defense team, but the matter was postponed to October 19 for disclosure.

Pillay faces charges of fraud, theft and violation of the Organized Crime Prevention Act.

He is out on bail of 50,000 rand.

NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane previously said that Pillay’s company was one of Mustek’s accredited distributors.

“Mustek’s core business is the sale and distribution of computers and electronic products through its network of approximately 6,000 accredited distributors,” he said.

It is alleged that by failing to deliver the desks, the municipality suffered an economic loss, News24 previously reported.
