JOHANNESBURG – Former KwaZulu-Natal Police Chief Mmamonnye Ngobeni and a police captain are expected to surrender to authorities on Monday.

The Hawks obtained arrest warrants for the couple after they failed to appear in court on Friday.

They were charged with fraud and corruption over a R47 million tender related to police accommodation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Authorities said Ngobeni faces three bribery-related corruption charges that he allegedly pocketed in exchange for instructing former Hawks boss Johan Booysen to stop an investigation into the R47 million police housing fraudulent scheme.

“In fact, the Investigation Directorate has two outstanding arrest warrants, one for a police captain and a former police commissioner in KZN. This is related to the R47 million corruption issue that is related to the 2010 World Cup activities in the province, ”said NPA spokesperson Sipho Ngwema.
