Former Orlando Pirates coach has engaged with the Brazilians, quelling exit rumors

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena says he is “extremely happy” at the club and will not leave the Tshwane giants to join Pitso Mosimane in eight-time African champion Al Ahly.

Following the departure of former Downs coach Mosimane to Al Ahly earlier this week, there were reports that Mokwena was also heading to Egypt to work as a substitute for former Bafana Bafana coach.

But the young coach who returned to the Sundowns in July after stints with the Orlando Pirates and Chippa United expressed his loyalty to the Brazilians.

“I am loyal and I stay at Mamelodi Sundowns. I have received questions from the media and have also seen statements on social media stating that I will be joining Al Ahly as an assistant coach, “Mokwena said in a statement on social media.

“I thought it necessary to state categorically that I am loyal to Mamelodi Sundowns and I am staying at Mamelodi Sundowns. I am very happy at the club. I am honored and enormously proud to be back here and would like to express my deep commitment and loyalty to the club, the president, the board and our supporters, the yellow nation.

“Serving him gives me great motivation and the spirit we have within us is what gives me a sense of belonging. Mamelodi Sundowns President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has supported me and always believed in me, and I am grateful for the trust he has consistently shown in me. “

Mokwena’s stay could fuel rumors that he could be given the mandate to co-coach Sundowns alongside Manqoba Mngqithi, who was also Mosimane’s assistant coach.

While Mokoena has dismissed rumors of following Mosimane to Cairo, the former Bafana Bafana coach has nonetheless taken away performance analyst Musi Matlaba and fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga.

Sundowns is more focused on replacing Mosimane, but the club will also have to find replacements for Matlaba and Rangoaga, who were considered key men for most of Mosimane’s eight trophy-laden years at Chloorkop.
