CAPE TOWN – While Cape Town’s dams have reached 100%, there are still cities in the Western Cape facing a water crisis.
Beaufort West is still in the grip of its worst drought.
The city’s main water supply, the Gamkapoort Dam, is currently 27%.
Beaufort West Mayor Noel Constable said the municipality is urging residents to use the water sparingly as they are doing everything they can to keep the taps from running dry.
He adds that the city is currently in Level 3 of water restrictions.
“If we don’t get water from the Gamkapoort dam, we can’t say that we are out of the drought situation. So we are still in the drought. We really hope to get the rain that is needed.”
Constable said the recent winter rains weren’t enough and the community had destroyed some wells, with only 32 in operation.
