The Gautrain issued an alert over the weekend to inform travelers that trains on the North-South and East-West lines would only be available every 30 minutes on Monday, October 5, 2020.
This is due to the strike action that is expected to begin on Monday morning after Gautrain’s wage negotiations with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) came to a standstill.
This after Numsa’s demand for a 26% increase was met with an offer for a 4.1% increase from Gautrain.
Please note that wage negotiations with NUMSA have stalled and our workers who are affiliated with NUMSA will go on strike starting Monday, October 05, 2020. We apologize for any inconvenience and assure you that we will keep you informed of any change in this consider. pic.twitter.com/8Ru5Q68xa4

Gautrain added that he would share details on services for off-peak hours on Monday.
“The bus and midi service will not be affected and will operate as scheduled.”

According to a statement issued by Numsa, the union “has done everything possible to find an amicable solution to the wage dispute. We have been negotiating with the BOC since March 2020, and the commitments were temporarily suspended during the lockdown. “
Negotiations resumed in June and Numsa has accused Bombela of showing “utter disdain and arrogance towards Numsa.”
“While still negotiating, the BOC abruptly interrupted the wage bargaining and declared a dispute against the union with the aim of blocking our members. The CCMA issued a certificate of non-resolution that allows union members to go on strike ”.
Although the certificate was issued in late August, Numsa said it continued negotiations with Bombela in an effort to resolve the impasse.
“To make matters worse, the BOC management issued an ultimatum that they will impose the 4% non-negotiated wage increase on our member from October 1, 2020 and this is what has triggered the strike.”
However, contrary to Gautrain’s statement, Numsa claims to have proposed an 8% increase to the Bombela administration.
Numsa added that they are open to compromise.
The BOC is trying to impose the pay increase and refuses to involve us in any meaningful way, details below ????????????????#GautrainStrike
