  • Two men have been arrested for the murder of farm manager Brendin Horner.
  • The arrests come after a R50,000 reward was offered for information.
  • The two, who were found with bloodstained clothing and shoes, are suspected cattle thieves.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of the Free State farm manager, Brendin Horner.

The arrests were made on Saturday by Senekal detectives at Fateng tse Ntho in Paul Roux, police spokesman Brig. Motantsi Makhele confirmed Sunday.

“Blood stained clothes and shoes were found and will be taken for forensic evidence. The two men are alleged to be cattle thieves and it is suspected that the deceased may have seen them on that fateful day,” Makhele said.

De Rots’ 21-year-old farm manager was found in an open space in Paul Roux around 6:30 a.m. Friday. He had been killed and tied, with a rope around his neck, to a post. He had serious injuries to his head and face.

A knife was found near the scene.

Reward ‘worked’

Horner’s Toyota Hilux was found abandoned and bloodstained near the Duikfontein Farm in the same area.

The arrests came after Gilly Scheepers, owner of the Bloukruin Boerdery where Horner worked, offered a reward of R50,000.

Scheepers confirmed that the bounty “had already worked” by leading to the arrests Saturday afternoon.

He added that offering a reward was something he would have done for any of his employees.

“[Horner] it was working for me. Anyone who works for me is like a family. Agriculture is a people’s business and without your people there can be no farm, “he says.

The two suspects, aged 32 and 43, will appear in Senekal Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
