Controversial Sedibeng Municipal Director and former Eastern Cape Social Development Director Stanley Khanyile has been shot and killed.
Khanyile was shot multiple times inside his vehicle Saturday in Alberton, a source confirmed to News24.
According to the EWN, Khanyile was shot six times and succumbed to his injuries.
Gauteng police spokesman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said: “Gauteng police have launched a search for unknown suspects following the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man whose identity the police cannot reveal or confirm at this time.
According to information from the scene, around noon Saturday, the deceased was in a vehicle parked in a shopping center at the corner of Hennie Alberts Road and Michelle Avenue in Meyersdal, Alberton, when a suspect shot him multiple times.
After shooting Khanyile, the suspect was reported to have jumped into a nearby gold Toyota Cressida.
Peters said the motive for the shooting was unclear at this stage.
In August, Khanyile, Durban businessman and chartered accountant Poovandaren Chetty and former chief director of the Eastern Cape social development department, defender Vuyokazi Sangoni, appeared before the King William’s Town Magistrates Court, where they faced charges of fraud, theft and money laundering of more than 29 million rand.
It was alleged that the defendants diverted the 29 million rand from a budget of 42 million rand for the construction of a resource development center during the fiscal year 2015-2016, and then a sum of 14.466 million was paid to Chetty’s company soon after.
All three were expected to appear in court again on October 16.
The police appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact the nearest police station or call the SAPS Crime Stoppage number.
“All information will be kept confidential,” Peters said.
