JOHANNESBURG – The Numsa union said its members in Gautrain would go on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.
The union has served Bombela Operations Company (BOC), which Gautrain manages, with a 48-hour strike notice.
This comes after unsuccessful wage negotiations between the union and management.
Numsa has accused the company of imposing a 4% pay increase without engaging with the workers.
This despite a call from the BOC to urge the union to abandon its strike intentions and respect the vote of the majority of the workers it represents.
The workers want a basic salary increase of 8%.
Numsa, who represents 258 workers out of 320 Gautrain employees, said it would cease operations on Monday if the company does not return to the negotiating table to find a mutually friendly solution.
Phakamile Hlubi-Majola of the union has accused the BOC of refusing to speak to workers in any meaningful way.
“In South Africa, there is a culture in the workplace where executives do what they please and force decisions on the workforce rather than engaging with workers to find a solution and this is the case at the BOC. Yes Well we understand that when they are in financial difficulty, probably due to COVID-19, no employer has the right to simply impose changes without significant commitment.
Numsa has urged residents to use alternative transportation next week.
