Speaking at Kinnear’s funeral, Police Minister Bheki Cele said it was vital that the police take action against their own implicated in corruption.

  • Police Minister Bheki Cele had demanded that action be taken against any agent implicated in the murder of Detective Colonel Charl Kinnear of the Anti-Gang Unit.
  • Kinnear was killed in an apparent murder in front of his home two weeks ago.
  • Cele added that the police force was no place for crime and that it was time to put politics aside.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has said that “heads must be rolled” over the murder of Lt. Col. Charl Kinnear of the Anti-Gang Unit, even if his own head is one of them.

Speaking at Kinnear’s funeral, held in Cape Town on Saturday, Cele said it was vital that the police take action against those involved in corruption themselves. She added that if she was involved in a violation, she should be the first to step aside.

His statements come after allegations that the slain police officer was investigating other officers who may have been supporting organized crime.

Kinnear was shot to death outside his home of Bishop Lavis in Cape Town two weeks ago, in what appears to have been a murder.

“We know he was dealing with our own criminality,” Cele said at the funeral.

However, Cele said, there was no place within the police force for crime or corruption.

“We cannot co-govern with crime,” he said.

“This is a war. The war has corpses, as we see [here today]. When you find a war, you don’t ask who started it, you fight. “

Cele added that no officer was going to rest until the circumstances surrounding Kinnear’s murder were known, and asked for a full report on the investigation of the corruption allegations within the police force. She asked for justice, referring to the biblical “eye for an eye”.

The police minister also echoed the sentiments expressed by Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde, saying that politics should be set aside in the fight against crime. He added that the criminals did not care about one’s political affiliation, but had “declared war on humanity.”

“The time has come when politics is put aside and we take care of the welfare of our people,” Cele said.
