CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Police spokesman Capt.Frederick van Wyk praised slain detective Charl Kinnear for both his friendship and work ethic.
Kinnear was a Cape Town anti-gang unit commander investigating several prominent figures from the criminal world.
The lieutenant colonel was killed outside his home in Bishop Lavis just over two weeks ago.
His funeral took place at Goodwood.
Van Wyk took his turn on the podium highlighting Kinnear’s camaraderie.
“Charl was one of those guys that you can sit on the stairs with, just sit, not speak, look at each other and then say ‘Jinne, ek het nou lekker kom kuier [That was a good visit]’. Charl was always alert, always protective, always alert. He had a work ethic that was commendable and an unshakable belief system and a relentless drive to fight corruption. ”
South African Human Rights Commissioner (SAHRC) Chris Nissen also took the time to praise Kinnear’s accomplishments.
“On behalf of Bishop Lavis’ people, I want to tell you that you must find comfort. I know you are seeking justice as well, but we bring our sincerest condolences to everyone at Bishop Lavis and elsewhere in this country.
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Kinnear murder and is expected to return to court on Monday.
