Durban – Cheers keep pouring in for former Sundown Pitso Mosimane manager, who this week shocked the local soccer fraternity by taking over as head coach at Africa’s most successful club, Egypt’s Al Ahly.

On Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa was the last person to wish Mosimane the best, saying that his appointment as coach of the Egyptian Premier League was a demonstration of African unity and ability.

President Ramaphosa said: “Pitso Mosimane will be missed as a force in South African football, but his appointment to our continent’s flagship club strengthens the ties of friendship between our two countries.

“It is also a recognition of the talent and capacity that resides within our own continent. I wish Pitso and his team the best as they fly our flag and the banner of continental football with a club that all Africans are proud of. “

Mosimane joins Al Ahly with three former Sundowns employees as part of his technical team, namely: assistant Rhulani Mokwena, physical trainer Kabelo Rangoaga and performance analyst Musi Matlaba.

Images on social media show Mosimane arriving in Egypt with fanfare. He met several Al Ahly fans at the airport and was taken to the club’s boardroom.

Pictures on social media also show him meeting his new players.

Ramaphosa has also offered his congratulations to the South African Tennis Board for ensuring that South Africa will host the 2023 World Table Tennis Championships to be held in Durban.

This will be the first time in 39 years that this tournament will be held on the African continent.

“The South African Tennis Board has prided our nation with a winning bid that will once again bring a global sport and friends from around the world to our shores,” said Ramaphosa.

“Now it is our turn to reward the trust expressed in us by the International Table Tennis Federation with efficient, innovative and hospitable preparations for and hosting this prestigious tournament.

“We especially welcome this recognition of our nation’s capabilities at a time when the world is centered on a global pandemic that, understandably, has taken our minds away from the hope, optimism, solidarity and inspiration that sport it can encourage, ”he said.
