‘Van de Beek could cover Rashford on left wing’: Solskjaer sees new Man Utd kid playing ‘in many different positions’

The Red Devils coach believes the Dutch international could move from a central role to the flanks if necessary to fill the position.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that he might consider using Donny van de Beek as an alternative to Marcus Rashford to the left of Manchester United’s attacking trident.

The Dutch international remains the only summer addition to Old Trafford in the current transfer window.

It has been facilitated in the fold, with action from the Premier League and Carabao Cup seen in the middle of the park.

His goal tally was opened from the bench in a season opener against Crystal Palace, while creativity has been on full display in meetings with Luton and Brighton.

Van de Beek was expected to fill a play-making role for United, and Solskjaer would bring another option to compete with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils boss, however, has hinted that the Dutchman can be used in a larger role as reinforcements in that department are hard to come by.

Solskjaer told reporters about Van de Beek after a 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Brighton: “I think he can play in many different positions, which is sometimes a strength for a player.

“Sometimes I remember right, left, center forward, 10 and I think Donny is one of those that the manager would always love to have on his squad.

“He has a very, very high football intelligence.

“Tactically it has gone through the Ajax system and Dutch football is tactical. He knows football and all the conversations I have had with him, you can see that his head is screwed.

“He’s a different kind of left-handed player compared to Dan James and Marcus Rashford, of course. But get in there, find good pockets, do good races, yes, why not? ”.

Solskjaer has also stated that Van de Beek could soon have his first Premier League start, with the Red Devils set to return to top flight action on Sunday with a date at home against José Mourinho and his Tottenham charges.

“We know how many games we are going to play this season and he will be vital to us,” Solskjaer continued of his latest £ 35 million ($ 46 million) pick.

“I think he has shown in all the games he has been part of that he has great quality and is a very intelligent player.

“He plays the game very simply, but effectively and with high qualities, so of course he is knocking on the door.”
