This followed an updated report from the SIU to Prime Minister David Makhura on the investigation into alleged Covid-19-related procurement irregularities.

It has failed

Announcing Lukhele’s preventive suspension in a statement on Wednesday, the Gauteng government said the SIU found that the department head had allegedly failed to exercise responsibility in awarding contracts during the procurement of goods and services related to the pandemic.

He said the actions or alleged omissions may have led to useless and wasted expenses.

“Makhura reiterates that everyone involved in Covid-19 corruption and malpractices, whether they are public officials, civil servants or businessmen, must be brought to justice,” Masebe said.
