JOHANNESBURG – Former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Smith has been accused of violating his legal duties and exercising his powers with partiality by agreeing to accept money from Bosasa.
Smith has been charged with fraud and corruption after receiving money through his company, Euro Blitz 48, worth 800,000 rand.
Smith, his company and former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi have been cited as defendants in the Hawks case.
In the indictment, the State asserts that the various payments made through the Euro Blitz 48 account were corruptly given and received as undue incentives to influence Smith to use his political influence to favor Bosasa.
He said Smith was a member of Parliament and had a legal duty to the registrar for all his recordable interests, which he did not do.
His attorney, Yousha Tayob, said they believed that Smith did not commit a crime.
“My client has already testified at the Zondo Commission when we were asked to do so. But I have no knowledge of what Agrizzi is going to say other than the accusations against my client. ”
If Smith is found guilty of fraud and corruption, he could be sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
The matter was postponed until October 14.
