JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State said it was not necessary for its executive committee (PEC) to debate the fate of former Mangaung mayor Olly Mlamleli.

Mlamleli, who was ousted as mayor of Manguang last month with the help of ANC councilors, is due to appear in court on Friday morning along with six other people.

She and three Free State officials were arrested Wednesday in connection with the R255 million asbestos project.

One month since the ANC NEC made the decision to have all members facing criminal charges immediately step aside, no one has done so yet.

Bongani Bongo and Zandile Gumede are some of the ANC’s headaches, and the former Mlamleli will be next.

Mlamleli is a member of the provincial executive committee.

ANC Free State spokesman Thabo Meeko said he would have to step aside.

“The issue has more to do with the implementation of the ANC constitution, the ANC’s resolution on the issues of people who have been arrested or the corruption allegations.”

With Free State in the limelight over the asbestos project and speculation of more arrests, Meeko said officials were closely monitoring the proceedings.

“The ANC has made the decision to monitor the situation at all times, that is why we have meetings from time to time to draw up an action plan.”
