A man was arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe technicians to reconnect his power.
- A resident of Johannesburg’s upscale Dainfern was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe technicians after he was late.
- City Power said that it had not paid its electricity bill of R463,000.
- He allegedly offered a bribe of 5,000 rand to avoid being left in the dark, but was caught in a sting.
A Dainfern resident, who owed R463,000 to Johannesburg City Power, was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe technicians to reconnect his lights.
City Power spokesman Isaac Mangena said power was cut off at the man’s two-story home on Wednesday.
Then he allegedly offered the technicians R5 000 to reconnect their power.
An operation was organized with the undercover police during which he allegedly paid the first installment of R1 500.
He was arrested and taken into custody at the Douglasdale Police Station.
The latest turn of events comes after City Power activated 204 clients who together owe around R13 million.
The highest debt was R1.4 million in a house without an electricity meter.
Last week’s cutting operation was initially delayed because City Power was unable to access, but when it threatened to cut off the entire property, it was allowed in.
“We would like to warn our clients not to offer bribes to City Power officials, as this is a serious crime,” Mangena said.
