Paris faces high alert

French authorities may put Paris on high virus alert as early as Monday, which could require the closure of all bars as the number of Covid-19 cases increases, says Health Minister Olivier Veran.

The capital and its closest suburbs, which comprise nearly seven million people, have already exceeded maximum alert thresholds, Veran said at a news conference.

Soccer fans can come back

The governing body of European football, UEFA, says it will allow spectators to return to matches in the Champions League and its other club and international competitions “at a maximum of 30 percent” of capacity.

So far, all the Champions League, Europa League and Nations League matches have been played behind closed doors due to Covid-19.

UK tightens more

The British government extends the blockades to Liverpool and several other cities in the north of England, effectively putting more than a quarter of the country of 66.8 million under tighter restrictions from the coronavirus.

And it imposes quarantine for travelers from Turkey and Poland due to the increasing risk of coronavirus in both countries.

Canada Extends Prohibition on Entry Outside the US

Canada extends the ban on non-essential international entries out of the United States until the end of October, amid a second wave of infections.

The United States has a separate relationship with Canada under which non-essential travelers cannot enter Canada, but essential workers can cross the border. That arrangement expires on October 21.

International flights in South Africa, Peru

The first regional and international flights land in South Africa, as its borders reopen after a closure of more than six months to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

And Peru will reopen its international airspace after a three-month shutdown on Monday, re-establishing ties with seven Latin American countries.

US airlines initiate new layoffs

American Airlines and United Airlines say they will begin laying off 19,000 and 13,000 workers, respectively, starting Thursday, the deadline they had set for an agreement on new aid to the pandemic-affected air travel sector.

US carriers who received billions in aid from Congress vowed to refrain from laying off workers until the end of September, setting the stage for thousands of job cuts in October.

Athens marathon canceled

The Athens marathon, scheduled for November, is canceled after the Greek athletic federation SEGAS said it could not “guarantee the absolute safety of the health of the runners.”

The Athens Marathon, which begins in Marathon, the city that gave the distance its name, and ends at the 1896 Athens Olympic Stadium, has grown over the past decade and now attracts tens of thousands of runners.
