Former SAAT official “ fears divorce ” after interrogation by the Zondo commission

His attorney jumped to his defense, questioning the relevance of the question.

“The problem here is simple: the receipt of R2.5m that has not been denied,” responded the chairman of the commission, Vice President of the Supreme Court Raymond Zondo, and ordered the lawyer to take a seat.

The commission revealed that Memela had entered into two “bogus” property sales agreements, which Memela denied were fraudulent.

In April 2015, Memela requested a bond of 1.4 million rand, which was rejected. However, a month later she made an offer to buy the East London land at R2.8m.

Zondo probed the circumstances in which Memela could commit so much when she had previously been denied half the amount. Memela said that she knew her mother would definitely give her the money after selling her property.

“But Mrs. Memela, you cannot make a serious offer on the basis of money that you do not have and you have no guarantee that you will,” Zondo said.

Hofmeyr said that Memela had acquired property without her husband’s knowledge, despite being married in community of property. She said that this was against the Marital Property Law and the Financial Intelligence Center Law.

“President, I am not sure if the commission is trying to cause a dispute between my husband and me. Certain things you don’t talk about … investing, especially in property, has always been my thing,” she said.
