Cape Town – Snow, widespread spring rains and storms are among the severe or extreme weather events expected today and in the coming days, the South African Weather Service warned.
Weather Service spokeswoman Hannelee Doubell said: “Already a cold front accompanied by a steep upper depression made landfall over the Western Cape on Wednesday afternoon, causing scattered or scattered showers and downpours in the southwest.
“More snowfall can be expected over these regions on Friday. Over the Western Cape, cold, cloudy and windy conditions with heavy rains and localized flooding will dominate the circulation pattern, ”said Doubell.
“The evolution of the climate is being closely monitored and should the need arise, radar warnings will be issued accordingly for the areas considered to be of higher risk. Coastal ocean users should also be careful, as very rough seas are expected as a result of the strong winds associated with this system. Windstorms and high seas conditions will also affect much of the Western Cape coastline. “
Local government MEC Anton Bredell said the provincial disaster management center remained on standby, as did all emergency response teams, for the next few days.
“We want to urge members of the public to take note of the warnings, stay indoors as much as possible, and limit travel and movement outdoors in the coming days. In an emergency, call 112, ”Bredell said.
Vinpro spokesman Conrad Schutte said: “If there were snowfall, it is expected mainly at higher altitudes, such as the higher slopes and mountains, where minimal grapes are grown for winemaking.”
