Vincent Smith, former ANC MP, granted bail of 30,000 rand in ‘Bosasa corruption case’

Smith has held senior positions, including the chairmanship of the auditor general’s standing committee and the correctional services committee. More recently, in the previous parliament, he chaired the ad hoc committee to amend section 25 of the constitution to allow the expropriation of land without compensation.

Bosasa, a facilities management company, is estimated to have raised some R12 billion in government tenders between 2003 and 2018, largely managing several prisons and the Lindela Repatriation Center.

Evidence heard in the state’s capture investigation has detailed how Bosasa and his top executives made questionable loans and gifted millions of rand to some ANC leaders, and the ruling party also benefited as an organization.

Bosasa went into voluntary liquidation in February after several financial institutions chose to close the company’s bank accounts as banks sought to distance themselves from corruption allegations.

This is a developing story.
