Consumers shopping across the country will now be able to make QR code payments at all FNB’s independent POS terminals.
The financial services company said the rollout is part of the ongoing expansion of its app-based integrated QR code and payments ecosystem, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of digital payment solutions in the country.
Thokozani Dlamini, CEO of FNB Merchant Services, said that given the challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is essential that the group accelerate the deployment of QR code payments for convenience and security.
Acceptance of the QR code is part of FNB’s overall contactless payment solutions, providing customers with convenient options to make payments via FNB Speedpoint devices at merchants throughout South Africa.
Any compatible QR code payment application can be used to Scan to Pay, an alternative to a bank card.
“In addition to the profitable, convenient and efficient payment process of contactless payments, both consumers and merchants will have peace of mind from a security perspective, as physical contact will be limited.
“Additionally, this solution will help us drive broader financial inclusion and acceptance, helping consumers get off cash,” said Dlamini.
Scan to Pay works with Masterpass, Mastercard’s digital payment service, which is interoperable with almost all major national QR code payment services.
This means that consumers will be able to use any compatible mobile QR code scanning app on FNB Speedpoint devices, including FNB Scan to Pay, Snapscan and Zapper.
