CAPE TOWN – Questions about why Cape Town’s detective Charl Kinnear was removed from security remain under investigation.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday for the murdered Kinnear anti-gang unit officer in Belhar, Cape Town. He was shot and killed earlier this month outside his Bishop Lavis home.
An arrested suspect is believed to have tracked Kinnear’s phone for several months until the day of his murder.
A mentor, brother, and dear friend were how colleagues who worked with Kinnear for many years described the anti-gang unit investigator.
The SAPS said it was robbed as it lost one of the best detectives in the country.
At the memorial service, questions were raised again about why the slain officer’s security detail was withdrawn months before his murder.

Provincial Police Commissioner Yolisa Matakata could not give many details, but when asked by the media, she confirmed that the decision was part of the investigation.
“It is something that is being investigated as promised by the police minister. The commissioner of the National Police has sent a senior manager and a team to investigate.”
Matakata said it was no secret that the lives of police officers were always in danger.
“Within 24 hours since Lieutenant Colonel Kinnear was shot and killed, a young sergeant was also killed in Khayelitsha and we have seen many cases of our members killed regardless of the type of work they are doing in the organization. By virtue of to put on the uniform, you are already a target. “
