CAPE TOWN – As the country’s international borders begin to reopen on Thursday, a travel ban will remain in place for leisure travelers from 57 high-risk countries.
The government released the list on Wednesday.
Countries on the high-risk list include the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Russia, France, and the Netherlands.
However, business visitors, diplomats and senior visa holders from high-risk countries will be allowed entry, as well as all travelers from the African continent.
The travel ban is likely to cause disappointment in the tourism sector, as it includes large markets like the UK and the US and comes just as the peak season kicks off.
International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor said the list was drawn up according to the criteria of the World Health Organization and will be revised every two weeks, taking into account changes in infection and death rates around the world. .
“Currently, leisure travelers from high risk countries will not be allowed to enter South Africa. Only highly qualified visa holders, investors in the South African economy and diplomats will be allowed to enter South Africa if a high risk country “.
All persons entering South Africa will be required to present a COVID-19 test taken at least 72 hours prior to departure and will be screened on arrival for COVID-19 symptoms and tested, if necessary.
“Anyone traveling to South Africa must have travel insurance to cover the cost of the test and, if the test is positive, the cost of quarantine.”
