Police are forced to examine fake news and real crimes when it comes to cracking down on kidnapping and human trafficking cases.

On Wednesday, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said that police launched into savage pursuit after being informed of a video that went viral on social media. The video allegedly showed evidence of kidnapping alleged to have taken place in Klerksdorp in the northwest.

“The preliminary investigation carried out after the police leadership in Dr. Kenneth Kaunda district learned of the video showed that no such incident was reported in Klerksdorp. Furthermore, it is also evident that the video was created to cause fear among the public, “said Mokgwabone.

“In addition, voice notes containing false and unsubstantiated information were shared over the weekend on social media platforms about alleged incidents of kidnapping for human trafficking purposes. However, it turned out that no cases were reported to the police in Mmabatho or Mahikeng, where the alleged incidents occurred, ”he said.

Northwest Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Seal Kwena asked people to verify information shared on social media before spreading it through their own networks. Kwena said these should always be verified with the police.
