You are an absolute pelican! – Nick Kyrgios in a new war of words on Twitter as Andy Murray debate heats up

Nick Kyrgios has gotten into another dispute on Twitter, this time with Karen Khachanov, whom the Australian has called “an absolute pelican.”

Kyrgios came to Andy Murray’s defense earlier this week when former world number one Mats Wilander questioned whether he should admit defeat on his return and retire now.

Khachanov made an exception to what he deemed “disrespectful” to Wilander, and Kyrgios was normally ready for the fight.

The full transcript of the exchange, which began with a repetition from the Russian to Kyrgios’s criticism of Wilander, can be read below …

Khachanov: Nick come on buddy … it’s too much … show some respect

Kyrgios: Nah, I’m a good friend. Muzz (Andy Murray) and I respect each other, and if someone starts talking about one of my own, I’ll go get them. Am I supposed to respect Mats? For what? Hitting a ball over the net? I don’t give him my respect for that.

Khachanov: Brother, it’s your decision. I really think you are a good boy and I have no problem with you. But once you’re sitting at home and writing different comments about the players, that makes me wonder who has the real problem …

Kyrgios: So do you think that what the players did during this pandemic was smart? I’d love to have an intellectual conversation with you, but I’m not sure it goes beyond how hard you can hit a ball. I have simply held people to account.

Khachanov: And next time, before I talk about my intellect, read at least a few books, instead, or play video games all day.

Kyrgios: I have also been feeding the hungry, helping to open new facilities for children to be active. But the way to do your research is absolutely pelican.

Kyrgios has been a constant critic of continuing to play tennis during the coronavirus pandemic and has chosen not to play both the US Open and Rolland Garros.
