JOHANNESBURG – The Hawks said Wednesday that four of the seven suspects detained by the unit in connection with the Free State asbestos project were government officials and the other three were from the private sector.

Six suspects were arrested, one was expected to turn himself in and the other was still at large.

The Hawks and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) pounced on the suspects in Gauteng, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

n In Gauteng, the Hawks arrested Blackhead Consulting director Edwin Sodi in Rosebank and took him to their Bryanston offices to presumably obtain more documents.

Former director general of human settlements Thabane Zulu was the suspect who was not found.

Sodi paid 600,000 rand for the purchase of a Range Rover.

The seven suspects were expected to appear in court in Bloemfontein on Friday.
