Pitso Mosimane has resigned from Mamelodi Sundowns supposedly to start working at one of the best clubs in North Africa.
TimesLIVE sources have linked him to continental giants Al Ahly of Egypt, as well as bitter rivals in the Caf Champions League Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.
Mosimane, who won his fifth South African championship with Sundowns last month, starts his new job as soon as it becomes available.
He was apparently approached after handing out the 10th Sundowns Premiership title on a dramatic final day of the season in which the Brazilians beat Kaizer Chiefs, who had been in the driver’s seat of the title race all season. season.
It was not immediately clear how the club will come together and Sundowns will handle the four-year contract he still has with the Brazilians.
Previous reports in Egypt had suggested that Al Ahly was targeting Italian Luciano Spalleti, but Ahly president Mohmoud El Khatib is a big fan of Mosimane and was one of the first to send his congratulations when Jingles led the Brazilians to a triple national success by adding the Nedbank. Cup for the Telkom Knockout and Absa Premiership titles they have already won before
But such have been Mosimane’s fights with Wydad that the Moroccans are said to have grown so fond of the former Bafana Bafana coach that they would love to have him on their bench.
Said our source: “The club he is going to has asked him to join immediately with the hope that he will lead them to success in the title of the Caf African Champions League.”
Having won the continent’s premier knockout competition with the Sundowns in 2016, Mosimane will not fail to fulfill this mandate that has been assigned to him.
“I hope Sundowns is happy with this. This is good news for South Africa. Historically, no black African coach has ever coached these great North African clubs.
“This honor bestowed on Pitso is an honor also bestowed on South Africa. And Sundowns was the incubator for all of this.”
But Yogesh Singh of Sundowns said there was nothing true in the matter.
“We have seen these things in the online media that Pitso is linked to Al Ahly. But he has not resigned. This speculation arises because the Al Ahly coach resigned on Sunday.”
Efforts to obtain a comment from Mosimane proved futile, as he did not answer his phone and the messages left for him were not returned.
Our sources, however, confirmed that Jingles will miss out on the home game and that the most enjoyable thing for him about his new job will be the fact that he has been given carte blanche on who he chooses to work with: “They have allowed him to appoint its own technical team, which will be announced in due course ”.
Mosimane, who won his fifth league title to become the Premiership’s most decorated coach, has a total of 11 trophies in his eight years at Sundowns.
The move is highly anticipated by Mosimane, who is held in high esteem across the continent, and particularly in North Africa, after he managed to end the apparent invincibility of the Arab parties.
Such is his position in Egypt that Mosimane was invited to be a guest analyst for the African Cup of Nations on one of the Egyptian television channels.
