Manchester United will face Brighton and Hove Albion at Amex Stadium for the second time in four days tomorrow as their goal is to beat the Seagulls in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
According to the club’s official website, “Ole suggested that he will make” some changes “for this last match,” one of which will surely be Dean Henderson in goal. “
It has been widely reported that Henderson has been promised opportunities to win David de Gea’s No. 1 jersey at Old Trafford and he will almost certainly be given the gloves in games like this.
Another almost certain starter will be Eric Bailly, whom Solskjaer hinted last week is Harry Maguire’s preferred partner if he can sustain a career injury-free. Tomorrow’s game will therefore be another opportunity to show his form.
In other places, there may not be as many changes as usual in the Carabao Cup qualifiers. While competition is not a priority, Solskjaer needs to build momentum and confidence in his team and will be desperate to win the game. For that reason, it seems unlikely that we will see the likes of Dan James, Odion Ighalo and Juan Mata in the starting lineup.
It must also be time for Donny van de Beek to start his second game with the Reds, the question is who will lead the way. Paul Pogba has been poor in his first two games this season, making it the logical choice. However, if the manager thinks he needs more games to find his sharpness, Bruno Fernandes could make way.
Nemanja Matic could be rested and replaced by Scott McTominay as a containment midfielder, but otherwise we expect a strong side; the only other question is whether Solskjaer will continue the cotton treatment with Mason Greenwood and give Jesse Lingard a run to the right, who seems to think he is a stronger option than James or Mata. Given the importance of a win, we think he’s more likely to stick with Greenwood.
With all that in mind, here is our planned side to face Brighton:
Manchester United’s new star Donny van de Beek is the 13th Dutchman to play for the senior team. But how much do you know about the other 12? Take our questionnaire below to find out.
