We list five of the most powerful 2.0-liter engines in South Africa.

Mercedes-AMG has the most powerful engine, with an output of 310 kW / 500 Nm.

Porsche also has a 2.0-liter engine in its portfolio.

The automotive world is slowly but surely distancing itself from six and eight cylinder engines. Instead, adopting smaller displacement engines and adding forced induction to the equation. One of the more popular engine options that automakers are gravitating toward is the 2.0-liter.

South Africa is also on the receiving end of these engines, with many sports cars implementing a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. We list the five most powerful engines in the country that displace 2.0 liters.

Mercedes-AMG

When Mercedes-AMG first launched its new A45 AMG at the beginning of the last decade, the car featured the most powerful 2.0-liter engine in the world. With 265kW and later 285kW at its disposal, the engine soon made its way to other vehicles in the A-Class family, namely the 45 AMG GLA and CLA models.

In 2020, Mercedes-AMG launched the new 45 AMG family, and now the engine produces 310 kW and 500 Nm in its most powerful form. Coupled to Merc’s 4Matic + all-wheel drive system, the A45 AMG can go from 0-100 km / h in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 270 km / h.

The same engine is also found in the 35 AMG and A250, which produce 225kW / 400Nm and 165kW / 350Nm, respectively.

Volkswagen, Audi, Honda

The current Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3 is the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. In both applications, the engine produces 228 kW and 400 Nm and is coupled to the respective all-wheel drive systems of its creators.

The Golf R is available only in hatchback, while the S3 can be had in Sportback (hatchback), cabriolet or sedan.

When the last generation Honda Civic Type R was released a few years ago, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine was dropped. Honda opted for an engine of the same displacement, but with a bolt-on turbocharger. In its latest version, the engine now produces 228 kW / 400 Nm. While the rest of the Civic range consists of sedans, the Type R is available in a hatchback only and is driven through the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Civic Type R is also the only car from this company that does not come from Europe.

BMW and Mini

The BMW Group, which includes both BMW and Mini, also has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in its arsenal. With 225 kW and 450 Nm, the engine powers the BMW M135i xDrive, the BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupé and various Mini models.

The Mini models that implement this engine are the Clubman John Cooper Works (JCW) ALL4 Clubman and JCW ALL4 Countryman.

All of the cars mentioned send power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Porsche

Yes, Porsche has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in its portfolio, and it powers the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. With 220 kW and 380 Nm, the engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Both cars will go from 0-100 km / h in less than five seconds and will stay true to the DNA for which Porsche sports cars are so famous.
