DURBAN – Dozens of suspects are expected to appear in Pretoria Magistrates Court Tuesday morning after being arrested for bid fraud in the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the amount of R56 million.

Twenty-two current SAPS members, as well as six former police officers, are among the 42 accused.

The affair dates back to 2018, when National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole established a team to investigate irregularities in the award of tenders for the marking of police vehicles.

Agents face a variety of charges, including money laundering, perjury, and theft.

Athlenda Mathe of the police said: “Initial investigations related to the marking and demarcation of SAPS vehicles and the massive looting of state funds through procurement irregularities and fraudulent prosecution of government contracts to illegally award the same supplier that has numerous companies registered in the supplier database “.

Mathe said they were pleased with the progress made on this case over the past two years and hoped the arrests would serve as a deterrent for corrupt police officers and vendors.
