The South African economy has lost 2.2 million jobs in the second quarter of 2020, according to data released by StatsSA.
JOHANNESBURG – Despite the loss of 2.2 million jobs in the second quarter of the year, the Labor Force Survey published by Stats SA indicates that there was also a massive decrease in unemployment.
The official unemployment rate fell from 30.1% in the first quarter of 2020 to a record low of 23.3% in the data from April to June this year.
However, the country came under a severe lockdown in the second quarter of the year, and potential job seekers were unable to search for work.
However, the data published by Stats SA point to a decrease of 4.3 million in the number of unemployed compared to the first quarter, when the decrease in the number of unemployed stood at 2.8 million people.
Experts had warned that it could be difficult for Stats SA to collect data from the period under review due to the strict lockdown and job applicants’ fears of contracting COVID-19.
The Quarterly Labor Force Survey is based on a household sample survey and collects data on the labor market activities of people aged 15 to 64 in the country.
