State security minister warns of ‘coup plot’ in Zimbabwe

Ncube made an opaque claim that there was an “Operation Light House” inspired by an anonymous Western nation to bring weapons of war to Zimbabwe.

“Some rogue elements among us are colluding with some hostile Western governments to smuggle weapons and establish so-called committees of democratic resistance,” he said.

Ncube was added to the selective sanctions list in October 2019 by the United States government due to its alleged involvement in serious human rights abuses. In his statement, he accused the opposition of turning the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) and church leaders against Mnangagwa.

“They have also tried to turn Western countries, Sadc and the churches against the government by making false accusations of human rights abuses. Negative forces have even gone to the extreme of managing kidnappings and spreading lies on social media, ”he said.

MDC Alliance General Treasurer David Coltart scoffed at the claim that the alliance was committed to nonviolence. He made a striking comparison of Ncube’s claim to one made in 1981 by Mnangagwa, then Minister of State Security, when Joshua Nkomo’s Zapu was accused of attempting to overthrow the late Robert Mugabe just one year after independence.

What followed was a crackdown that resulted in the Gukurahundi massacres in which at least 20,000 civilian lives were lost in the Zapu strongholds.
