Johannesburg – A truck driver died in Pinetown after a freak accident in which his truck collided with at least four cars, including a police vehicle, before crashing into a home.
The truck collided with two vehicles on the highway, before veering onto a residential property where it collided with two cars in the yard and caused significant property damage.
Other than the truck driver who died at the scene, no other injuries were reported in the bizarre incident that was captured on video with multiple people expressing shock at the incident.
In the video, the truck is seen colliding with a VW Golf before colliding with a subway police vehicle. The truck veers down an embankment and enters a residential property before stopping.
Life Response paramedics said the accident occurred at the intersection of East and Stapleton Road in the Pinetown area.
“The truck collided with four vehicles at the intersection, the truck driver got out of his truck and was talking to the subway police.
“When he came back and tried to back up his truck, the truck gained momentum going down Stapleton Road, pushing cars with it.
“The truck driver tried to stop the truck and in doing so he fell and hit his head on the road.
“The truck fell off an embankment and entered a residential property causing severe damage to the property and two vehicles on the property,” Life Response paramedics said in a statement.
Paramedics said the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was not injured by the truck, as some have said on social media and in videos captured from the scene.
“The truck driver passed away while his truck was out of control. The truck driver was not injured by the out of control truck.
“Life Response paramedics treated the truck driver and attempted to resuscitate the driver, but sadly he passed away.
“Fortunately, no one else was injured in the initial accident or when the truck fell off the embankment,” paramedics said.
Traffic in the area has been severely hampered.
The police are on the scene.
