JOHANNESBURG – Cosatu has come out strongly against the government, saying that his planned strike for next week represented a fight against the collapse of the state and the economy that he could not afford to lose.

The country’s largest labor federation will take to the streets next Wednesday as part of its Section 77 strike for what it says are socioeconomic injustices in the country.

This is Cosatu’s first massive protest against President Cyril Ramaphosa and the sixth administration, as tensions over the government’s leadership continue to simmer.

Among the list of demands that Cosatu will make to the government during the strike is that the families of politicians be prohibited from doing business with the state, and those who insist on this must resign their positions.

This follows a lengthy debate within Cabinet on the matter which Eyewitness News understands has not received the support of all its members.

Cosatu said that the social partners who were part of the National Council for Economic Development and Labor had obtained a legal opinion supporting the measure and has asked the cabinet to support and implement it.

This is part of the interventions that Cosatu believes should be applied to crack down on corruption in the state after another wave of looting public funds, this time through COVID-19 tenders.

“We urge all South Africans to join this strike because it is time for all of us to take a stand against the scourge of corruption,” said Cosatu spokeswoman Sizwe Pamla.

The Section 77 certificate obtained by Cosatu to start the strike covers all workers in the country, which means that as long as the action is protected, the rule of not working, not paying, will apply.
