According to Urban Warriors, 51 percent owned by the Dutch giants has been sold to Cape Town Stars
The Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam have cut their ties with the NFD feeder team Ajax Cape Town.
In a statement released Monday night, Urban Warriors said Cape Town Stars, which owns 49 percent of the shares, will take control of the franchise from October 1.
This means that Ajax Cape Town will likely change its name before the 2020-21 season.
“Cape Town Stars, the South African minority shareholder of Ajax Cape Town has reached an agreement to take control of the franchise,” the statement read.
“Cape Town Stars, a 49% shareholder of Ajax Cape Town, is pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement to acquire 51% of the GladAfrica Championship franchise from Ajax Amsterdam as of October 1st.”
“After 21 years of association with their Dutch counterparts, Cape Town Stars will acquire full control of the South African club.
“Cape Town Stars will soon be in a position to advise on the way forward regarding the future of the franchise.”
Ajax’s decision to sell its 51% stake is due to a long battle with Urban Warriors president Ari Efstathiou.
Efstathiou’s fight with Ajax started when he suspended Hans Vonk for misconduct earlier this year and that did not sit well with the Eredivisie team.
In February, the former Bafana goalkeeper Bafana left the Ikamva-based team and was followed out the door by then-head coach Andries Ulderink.
Efstathiou did not name Ulderink’s replacement as he decided to stay with assistant Calvin Marlin for the remainder of the season.
Under Marlin’s supervision, Ajax gave up its healthy lead at the top of the NFD rankings towards the end of the season and eventually missed automatic promotion to the elite league.
The Urban Warriors also took second place in the promotion / relegation play-offs after accumulating six points out of a possible 12 with Black Leopards successfully retaining their top flight status with a 100% win record.
The latest events will deal a great blow to the people of Cape Town who were hoping to see Ajax Cape Town’s campaign at PSL in the near future.
