The Protea Magistrates Court denied bail to three police officers accused of killing 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies outside his home in Eldorado Park last month.
On Monday, Magistrate David Mhango said releasing Sergeant Simon Scorpion Ndyalvane, 46, and his co-defendant, Officer Caylene Whiteboy, 23, and Sergeant Foster Netshiongolo, 37, would cause further disturbances among Eldorado Park residents. , who demanded justice.
He said:
If you are out on bail, there is [the] likely to interfere with investigations. There is the possibility that the State’s witnesses may be interfered with and intimidated. They know who the witnesses are in this matter.
“Some witnesses were present in the police vehicle when the deceased was shot and killed. The case of the State against the accused is very strong. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.
“There is [the] probability that Ndyalvane carries [out] his threats against Whiteboy. Whiteboy will be safe from Ndyalvane if she is kept in prison. [The] The community is angry about the defendant’s conduct.
“The community demands answers [as to] why an innocent and unarmed teenager was shot and killed [by police]. His release will disturb the public peace and the vigilance of public order. This is shown by the level of anger in the community, “Mhango said.
The case was postponed until November 6.
