On Monday, the ANC confirmed that a former MEC from Mpumalanga had been arrested after allegations of rape.
In a statement, ANC Acting Provincial Secretary Lindiwe Ntshalintshali said the man was arrested at his home and will soon appear before the Nelspruit Magistrates Court.
TimesLIVE does not name the official in an attempt to protect the identity of his daughters who are allegedly victims in the case.
Ntshalintshali said the member had been suspended from the party.
“[He] has been summarily suspended as a member of the ANC and PEC until the case is concluded by the competent court, in accordance with the resolutions of the most recent meeting of the ANC national executive committee and the 54th national conference, which ruled that all Members charged for corruption and other serious crimes should withdraw from all activities associated with the ANC, ”he said in a statement.
The party said it took the accusations seriously and supported the victims.
Police could not be immediately reached for further details.
It was not the first time the suspect had been implicated in rape allegations.
He was previously arrested after a woman accused him of rape, but he denied the accusation, claiming that the meeting had been consensual.
The charges were later dropped by the state.
