JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa said it was extremely important for South Africa to increase its electricity generation capacity.
The president has used his weekly bulletin to address the country’s energy crisis and how the government plans to stabilize the situation, at least in the short term.
Ramaphosa said that with electricity severely restricted, the government would prioritize new generation projects to strengthen the country’s grid.
The tender for acquisitions, including the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Program, will open soon.
Ramaphosa said an additional 2,000 megawatts of emergency power were being urgently sought to cover the country’s current energy deficit.
In an effort to allow self-generation of electricity, the government removed licensing requirements for projects of less than one megawatt.
Draft amendments to the regulations that will help municipalities produce their own power from independent power producers will also be published soon.
