Johannesburg – Another 22 people have died from Covid-19 in South Africa over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of Covid-related deaths to 16,398 in the country as of Sunday, according to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
Seven of the deaths were in the Eastern Cape, five in KwaZulu-Natal, two in Gauteng, five in the Northwest and three in the Western Cape.
“We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and we thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients,” he said.
An additional 1,268 new cases have been recorded, bringing the number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa to 670,766.
Case data by province
The number of recoveries has increased and is now 603,721. That translates to a 90% recovery rate, Mkhize said.
“The cumulative number of tests performed to date is 4,143,466 with 15,028 new tests performed since the last report.”
Data test
Of these tests, 2,348,099 had been carried out in private facilities, while 1,795,367 were carried out in public institutions.
Deaths and recoveries
With 4,203 deaths, Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of lives lost to Covid-19, but is closely followed by the Western Cape with 4,163, while the death toll in the Eastern Cape is 3,110.
KwaZulu-Natal has registered 2,626 deaths from Covid-19, the Free State has 838, Mpumalanga registered 520 and the Northwest stands at 255.
The North Cape has so far recorded the lowest number of deaths from Covid-19 at 197.
