Mikel Arteta backed to replicate Jurgen Klopp as expert trades Liverpool title

Former Reds goalkeeper David James has reversed his prediction that Liverpool will be defeated by Arsenal for the Premier League title this season, for a simple reason.

After Arsenal’s win over Fulham on the opening day, James had said: “As everyone knows, winning the league is not easy. Winning the league twice is very, very difficult.

“When Liverpool have had almost two perfect seasons, you wonder if they can reproduce that. As a football fan, I like what Mikel Arteta is doing and I think they have the opportunity.”

But the signing of Thiago Alcantara has made the expert change his mind.

James told Blood Red on a special podcast: “I have to clarify, I mentioned this before Thiago joined Liverpool! That’s the problem with preseason predictions – things can change very quickly!

“I like what Mikel is trying to do and he has made some fundamental changes. Jurgen Klopp did this with Liverpool, let’s be right.

“When he signed at Liverpool, he didn’t bring in anyone during that first transfer window. He got what was a team of players that was getting a lot of stick and galvanized them into a formidable force.

“Mikel has done that at Arsenal and I thought there would be a continuation of that. It’s not me saying that Liverpool wouldn’t challenge and Arsenal would win it without a doubt, I just felt that the teams will show improvement,” Arsenal could.

“It’s an outsider, of course, but I like what Arteta is doing.

“But then Liverpool signed Thiago and I can’t change what I said before, but given the changes, Liverpool have definitely stepped up because Thiago is something special.”

“Thiago and Diogo Jota are two key signings and without wanting to pressure them, Liverpool should win the league now.”

Liverpool hope to go further in the Champions League this season than last.

Klopp’s men will meet their opponents in the group stage on Thursday afternoon, just before taking on Arsenal in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
